last lecture

today is the last lecture of DS. basically we have some recap of the year and get to know some designer and also their work. for example mies van de rohe- barcelona pavillion. we've also being asked what is design after whole year of studying designing.
what is design- creating and giving spatial quality to a space. it isn't about adding element to a space like adding a table to an empty space but it is about designing a space that suits a strong concept. besides we've also done a small exe about paper folding

16 photographs

beside all those hectic on shophouses...we've also done some interesting stuff. 1 of them is taking 16 photographs based on different themes.

i've went to clarke quay to take some of those photo and some i've collect through the time. finding those shots that suits the themes is a bit of a trouble but once you really understand what the theme means it's in fact quite easy

term 4- a busy term

after 3 weeks of hols in msia...finally it's the start of final term. after that i'll be going year 2 (hopefully)

during the hols, we're asked to figure out the design of our shophouse based on our designer in art love design in TOD. my designer is Ken Yeang.

Ken Yeang is a malaysian architect. he's famously known for his bioclimatic high rise design (ecodesign) for high rise in the tropical country mostly in malaysia. therefore the 3 principles that i've chosen for designing his shophouse are:
1. controlled ventilation
2. natural lighting
3. bringing landscape into the interior

mood box:
1st mood box

the trees- bringing natural element into the interior
the opening on the front & back- controlled ventilation
windows- natural lighting

2nd mood box

sketches of my concept

for my 2nd mood box, i translate the concept portrays in the 1st mood box into a more abstract way.

different gradient of triangles- circulating the wind that come down from the top
only a small portion of the top part are opened- controlled ventilation. i wanted the wind to come in only from the top part
carpet grass- natural element
acrylic sheet on the left & right- openess

then translating the concept into the shophouse:
sketches:
1st sketch

2nd sketch

3rd sketch

final sketch/ final design

i create 2 opening at the roof area. 1 in front and 1 at the airwell. the different gradient of triangles from my mood box from the walls of my shophouse. the walls are created by rows n rows of louvered window so that the wind can circulate around the whole house. there's two pond at the 1st storey to collect rain water coming down from the opening.

from these i then proceed to my mock up
overview of the mock up

view from airwell downwards

view from mezz storey bedroom

i've spend lots time on the mock up and those before mock up causing me to have no time to finish things up for my final submission. haih...so....just have to rush....
things for final submission 6th feb:
final model
A1 board
construction drawing
3D viz
art love design process journal
intech wall detailing

luckily they've extend the submission date of intech wall and the A1 board/ final model. if not i dont think i can even submit anything on time.

view of my final shophouse:

view of the 1st storey towards rearcourt

view of the 1st storey from rearcourt
view from the mezz storey bedroom
view from airwell in the front area downwards

overview of my shophouse

basically the design of my final shophouse is the same as my mock up. i've changed a bit here and there towards the whole process to make it better. overview, it's a shophouse that is naturally ventilated, naturally lit and you can feel the nature when you're inside. it seems as if you are outside the house. the interesting part is from every room, you can look down towards the 1st storey and also direct view towards the sky. when it rains, the triangular wall that partially covered up the void will create some kind of waterfall like water feeature inside. from outside, you can see the reflective pool as the center of attraction.i also create vertical planting on the bare walls as from my research, i come to know that plants can cool down the environment. since that's the case, why don't i just plant some grass on the walls instead of the grown to make things more interesting and at the same time i can save some space. =)

hectic

after whole 2 weeks of warming up, now is when the hectic comes. CADP and DS submission in a row...

for CADP we're suppose to find a shophouse with airwell and forecourt and measure it. we faced problems while finding a suitable shophouse that suits our requirement. most of the shophouse are already demolished and reconstruct to fit the design today. finaly we found a shophouse in emerald hill.

location plan

site plan

during the drafting of the shophouse we'd faced some problems with incooperation with some of the group members and also it was a hectic trying to draw out an accurate CAD drawing. we've done a lot of ammendments again n again to the drawing. but...it's still not perfect....anyways...thanks to alvin n especially joycelyn with her knowledge of drafting our CAD drawing can go this far.

for DS, first we've a lecture about human body. then we're asked to design a thing that can be wear on the body with 1m of wire.
guess what does this thing does?

it's a leg bracelet =)

after that, we're asked to do a machine for people by taking off 1 of your senses. lots of us mistaken it to be a machine for the diabled.
my 1st machine design

our concept comes from the ski. this machine allows a person with paralyse leg to stand up and walk, there're two handle for the person with paralyze leg to hold with their hand and the handles are link to the pole. a soft material is placed at the end of the pole and slot into the shoe. the paralyse person can lift up their leg in order to walk.

comments on the 1st machine:

1. not comfortable. a person with paralyse leg might as well sit on a wheel chair rather than using this machine. somemore, the person needs to push down their feet in order to walk.

2. the way the paralyse people uses this machine to walk isn't the same as the way normal people walk.

3. a paralyse person can be considered to be a disabled person

we then proceed to our 2nd design. which is a lot better....
our concept comes from the the hair on our body. our body is covered with small hair. the hair brushes on the surface of a solid to enable the person to feel the texture of the object. this time we partially take out the sense of sight of the person. with sense of sight partially taken out, the person is unable to tell the distance between him and a object in front. therefore there's a huge tendency for him to knock the object in front. we create a machine that surrounds the body with hard material to protect the person when knocking into hard object, enhancing the sense of sound and enabless the person to feel the texture of the obkect- whether it's hard or soft.

after the week of photography , we're suppose to measure our own body and action. how?
below are some pictures...
exe 1- stationary position
interaction between human
skuad
standing

exe 2- moving position
sweeping the floor

jumping

exe 3- stairs

L shaped stairs

U shaped stairs

exe 4-relating with furniture
showering

reading on bed

i didn't draw all those. i use trace...LOL...take some pic of me in stationary, import into com, then trace on the screen. i use orange pen for the dimension cause i wanted to differentiate them from the drawing.

exe 5- that's the way i like it.
this exe is a bit different from those before this. we're suppose to take a series of photo that can make up movie when u flip through them then choose some from them that seems in continuous action and mount it on A1 board

new term, new sem, new assignment

well, as mention, today is the start of term 3 sem 2. which means things will become harder n i'll become busier n stresser....

for the start of this term we've photography workshop for the 1st week. it's a very interesting n useful thing for our course...

first we're seperated into groups based on colours.i'm in yellow group. we're suppose to take pictures for things that are yellow and combine it to become a collage

the yellow pic that i've sumitted

yellow collage

then we're taught on the technique and skills of home studio photography skills. all u need is just 1 buttered paper, aluminium sheet, table lamp, black cloth/ white cloth and a camera

some close up

then, we have educational trip to little India. we're suppose to take pictures according to a few themes: big sky, edge cut sun, separate shape, off center.....
